Talismans are laid out to be sold for the new year at Kawasaki Daishi temple in Kawasaki, where more than 3 million people visit to pray during the first three days of the New Year. On Monday, four priests were carefully finishing up making the talismans, which are said to protect the safety of loved ones and ward off bad luck.

Santa Claus waves as he walks down the boarding stairs after arriving from Finland at Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture on Friday. Officially recognized by the Santa Claus Foundation, for which Finnair serves as a sponsor, Santa arrived on a direct flight from Helsinki instead of riding his sleigh and reindeer. He will greet children at Christmas events in Tokyo, Osaka and other locations until Dec. 13.
